Second Chance Scholarships

Who We Serve

The 2nd Chance Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to high school graduates who have experienced adversity and desire a second chance at a brighter future, by continuing their education at a two-year or four-year college or university or at a vocational or technical school.

Second Chance Scholarship has assisted students from the KCMO & KCK school districts and surrounding area since 2008. The Committees selection weighs heavily on the students essay on our application.

Student Involvement

Since the fund was established, more than 60 students have been awarded scholarships to a variety of different schools.

Each selected scholar is assigned a mentor so that we can support the student and their individual needs.   On occasion, a member of the committee has gone with the student and their guardian to the business office or has visited the dorm, but generally we are able to mentor the students through simple checklists.  A few of our students have helped us with a donor event, and we hold a yearly summer event with the scholar and their parent/guardian.  The scholars also meet other scholars and not only hear their experience but many times form friendships with others going to the same school.

Student Profile

Name: Almanek “Nikki” Allums

High School District: Kansas City Kansas Public Schools

Higher Education Pursued: Business Finance Degree, Kansas State University

I was born and raised in Kansas City, KS. I have three younger brothers that I love very much. I experienced a lot of hardships as a high school student. I suffered the loss of my mother and grandmother within a year of each other. In dealing with the effects that come from losing loved ones, I have grown and learned to adapt to my surroundings well. Throughout my life, I have always put my education first because I have been taught that education is the one thing that cannot be taken away from you. I value learning and I am focused on learning all that I can in order to be a successful individual.

I am currently a sophomore at Kansas State University where I study Finance in the school of business. I am active on campus: I serve on the executive board of the award winning Black Student Union, The fundraising chair for the Eta Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta and a few other things. I have learned many things about myself as a student here at KSU and one of the most important things is that I can do anything I put my mind to. I’m not unlike many other students in the fact that I, too, struggle with balancing school, extra activities and work but I’ve learned how to better manage my time effectively and that is one of the most important skills I have. I plan to earn a bachelor’s degree in Finance with a certificate in international business. As far as my post-collegiate goals, I hope to attain a position with a financial management firm and continue serving my community through my sorority with an emphasis on financial and wealth management.

  • Other Scholarships of Interest

Second Chance Scholarship Foundation is just one of the scholarships managed by The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation (GKCCF).  Look at the GKCCF site for more scholarships.  When scholarships are found under their site you know that the are managed with 100% of the funds going directly to students.  Local colleges also know that if GKCCF is behind the scholarship that they can count on the funds being available in time for college deadlines.

  • Annually, our scholars & their parents and/or mentors all are treated to a night at the T-Bones Game.  Our scholars meet those on the selection board, the mentors scholarship financial contributors & sometimes just as importantly other current and past Second Chance Scholars. This event is fully funded by Matt & Jessica Brandmeyer and does not come out of the Foundation.  100% of the Foundation funds are used for tuition and books for our scholars.  For more information please use the email function on this site.
